Larena Drive in Taclobo Dumaguete City

The Larena brothers (spelled Larena in historical registry records, though often rendered as Llarena)—Don Melitón Larena and Don Demetrio Larena—played pivotal roles in the political, military, educational, and civic transformation of Dumaguete and the province of Negros Oriental.

Key Historical Breakthroughs & Contributions

1. Military Leadership During the Negros Revolution

  • Melitón Larena as Military Commander: During the Spanish-American War and the 1898 Negros Revolution, Melitón served as the Military Chief of the Southern Zone in East Negros. He organized local revolutionary forces and guerilla units in and around Dumaguete to dislodge Spanish colonial garrisons.

  • Demetrio Larena in the Revolutionary Cabinet: Demetrio served as Vice President of the Republic of Negros (Gobierno Cantonal de Negros) from November 1898 until the reorganization under American administration. He was central to maintaining public order and civilian administration while transitioning out of Spanish colonial rule.

2. Founding & Governance of Modern Negros Oriental

  • Establishment of Provincial Governance: When the provincial government of Negros Oriental was formally organized under Act No. 120 of the Philippine Commission in 1901, Demetrio Larena was appointed as the first Civil Governor of Negros Oriental.

  • First Municipal President of Dumaguete: Melitón Larena was sworn in as the first Municipal President (Town Mayor) of Dumaguete under American civil government. Together, the brothers held the highest provincial and municipal executive posts simultaneously, establishing public works, taxation structures, and law enforcement.

3. Institutionalization of Silliman Institute

  • Securing Dumaguete for Dr. David Hibbard: When Dr. David S. Hibbard was sent to the Philippines in 1901 to establish a Protestant mission school, he originally considered Cebu, Iloilo, and Zamboanga. Upon arriving in Dumaguete, the Larena brothers personally hosted Dr. Hibbard, warmly welcomed the project, and convinced him that Dumaguete was the ideal venue.

  • First Filipino Member of the Board of Trustees: Demetrio Larena became the first Filipino member of the Board of Trustees of Silliman Institute. He actively guided its integration with the local population, assisted in acquiring land, and advocated for co-education and public instruction.

4. Pioneering Protestant Faith & Religious Tolerance

  • Catalysts for the Protestant Reformation in Negros: The brothers were among the earliest Filipino converts to Presbyterian Protestantism in the Visayas, using their leadership standing as former Cabezas de Barangay of Barangay Taclobo to encourage local families to embrace Protestantism and modern literacy.

  • Bridge Builders During Civic Transition: Their conversion and active support for American Protestant missionaries helped prevent religious and civic friction in Dumaguete during the transition between Catholic Spanish rule and Protestant American administration.

5. Infrastructure & Municipal Modernization

  • Urban Planning and Expansion: During their tenures as Mayor and Governor, the Larena brothers oversaw the initial layout of public spaces, roads, and municipal administration facilities in Dumaguete. Their legacy is commemorated in Dumaguete through Larena Drive in Barangay Taclobo, as well as the naming of the municipality of Larena (on Siquijor Island, which was formerly a sub-province of Negros Oriental).
